November 2008
I hope you enjoyed the message from your Vice Chair, Dan Crona last month regarding ASHP Legislative Day in Washington D.C and ASHP’s advocacy efforts in increasing PGY-2 residency funding and expanded roles for pharmacists as providers. If you missed it, you can find it in the link at the bottom of this page.
The 2008 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting (MCM) is quickly approaching and I want to take this opportunity to highlight a few events you won't want to miss! We have 15 different sessions planned for the Student Programming on Sunday, December 7th with 2-3 different student sessions occurring at the same time. The overlapping sessions are aimed at students in different years of pharmacy school, so choose the sessions that best fits your current professional development. First, make sure you attend the Student Opening Session Sunday morning. With Midyear seeming a bit overwhelming at times, this is a great session to give you a brief overview of when and where student events are taking place. At the same time, I will be introducing your ASHP Student Executive Committee, ASHP Advisory Groups, and the long anticipated top 10 finalists for the ASHP Clinical Skills Competition. So come support your school and fellow classmates who participated! Second, if you are interested in student society leadership development, make sure you attend the student leadership session on Sunday. Keep in mind that space is limited, so we ask that you send one student representative per school.
As you are aware, leadership development has always played an important role in our profession. There are many opportunities for ASHP leadership involvement. If you are interested in applying for the ASHP Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Committee, please take a look at the following website for more information as the deadline for application submission is December 31st, 2008 - Feel free to come speak with us at Midyear and we would love to share with you our experiences and what we have gotten out of serving on the Executive Committee!
Another piece of news I have for you is the ASHP Student Leadership Award. This program recognizes students with a passion for health-system pharmacy practice who have demonstrated leadership ability. The deadline for application submission is January 30, 2009. If you are interested and would like more information, please take a look at the following website.
As always, if you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me at huangy@u.washington.edu or the ASHP Pharmacy Student Forum at students@ashp.org.
I look forward to meeting you at ASHP Midyear!
